I Never Planned on Joining the Military...
I was 26 years old, when I joined the U.S. Navy. Before I ever put on a military uniform, I had already built a successful career in the entertainment industry. I was traveling the country, making good money, and working with celebrities I had grown up watching on television and film. From the outside, it looked like I was living the dream.
The truth was, I had reached a point of burnout. The constant travel was taking its toll, and although I was working as a Production Stage Manager, I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
My dream wasn't just to help produce someone else's vision. I wanted to write, direct, produce, and act in my own films. I knew that if I was ever going to pursue those dreams, I needed a different direction.
Then one day, a U.S. Navy recruiter asked me a question that had never crossed my mind.
"Have you ever thought about giving the Navy a chance?"
I hadn't.
Looking back, that simple question changed the direction of my life forever.
The U.S. Navy Changed My Life
Joining the the U.S. Navy in 1997 gave me something I didn't even know I was looking for.
It gave me a greater purpose. It gave me direction. It gave me the opportunity to serve something greater than myself. Most of all, it gave me a mission and a level of camaraderie that I had never experienced before.
I served an 18-month tour at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where I worked as a patrolman and was assigned to migrant operations before later transferring to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, Italy.
While stationed at NAS Sigonella, Sicily, in 2000 I continued serving as a U.S. Navy Law Enforcement Specialist (NEC 9545) on general billet. Although law enforcement was my military assignment, it didn't stop me from pursuing my passion for filmmaking during my off-duty time.
Working a Pitman schedule gave me several consecutive days off between shifts, and I decided to take full advantage of that time. I bought a video camera, a stack of videotapes, and started making movies again.
When I had 3 days off, I was filming.
When I had 2 days off, I was filming.
Of course, I got my rest too, but I took full advantage of the time the schedule gave me. During those off-duty days, I wrote, produced, and directed a short film called The Triangle. I also began producing a documentary following the US Navy boxing team as they prepared to compete against the US Army boxing team in 2001. The project eventually earned me approval to travel to Germany to continue filming before the events of September 11, 2001, changed those plans.
Looking back, I didn't realize it then, but I was already living the philosophy I teach today.
Like every military career, however, my enlistment eventually came to an end.
I believed I was ready to transition back into civilian life.
I wasn't.
AND THAT'S WHEN IT HIT ME...
After 9/11 the civilian world was nothing like I expected.
Instead, I discovered that even jobs that were supposed to be stable weren't always stable. I worked for a police department where one week we got paid, and the next week we were told the city didn't have the money.
Then another reality hit me.
The camaraderie that exists in the military does not exist in the civilian world.
The mission was gone.
The brotherhood was gone.
The daily sense of purpose I had become accustomed to was gone.
I wasn't just leaving a career.
I was leaving a way of life.
That's when I realized something that changed my life forever.
If I ever wore the uniform again...
I wasn't going to spend my military career thinking only about my military career.
I was going to build my future while I served.
So i made a different decision
2004 at 34 years old, I joined the U.S. Army with a completely different mindset.
This time, I wasn't just serving my country.
I was preparing for the day I would eventually become a veteran again, this time for the US Army.
Fort Polk, Louisiana, had a reputation as one of the toughest duty stations in the Army. To be honest, it wasn't my favorite place either.
There were days, weeks and months I didn't enjoy it.
There were frustrations just like every service member experiences in every branch, except the Air Force. LOL!
I had two choices.
I could complain.
I could become bitter.
I could waste my free time.
Or...
I could make that duty station work for me.
I chose the second option.
Instead of asking, "How do I get out of here?" I started asking, "What can I build while I'm here?"
That one question changed everything.
Preparation Creates Opportunity
During my off duty hours, I immersed myself in photography. While I served as an Infantryman, I photographed families, weddings, and special events on weekends. It had nothing to do with my military job, but it had everything to do with the future I wanted to build.
Before I joined the Army, I was studying Video Production at the Art Institute of California Los Angeles in Santa Monica. Although my major was Video Production, it was one photography class that changed my life. My instructor had incredibly high standards. She didn't grade our work by looking at the finished prints. She graded us by examining the film negatives. Every exposure, every composition, and every technical mistake was visible. There was no hiding behind editing or technology. That class taught me how to see differently, and those lessons stayed with me for years.
Although I wasn't able to finish the program after my grandmother passed away, the lessons I learned in that photography class never left me. Years later, while stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, I entered the Annual All Army Photo Contest using photographs I had taken while studying at the Art Institute of California Los Angeles, along with color photographs I captured after arriving at Fort Polk during the Welcome Home Parade for the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment following its deployment to Iraq.
Those entries earned First Place in Black and White Photography, Second Place in Color Photography, Second Place in Short Video for Skate Kid, and two Honorable Mentions.
The award winning photographs and the original Skate Kid short video are shown below. The photographs were captured on film, developed in the darkroom, and submitted as photographic prints. Years later, I digitized them so they could be preserved and shared.
I even took a selfie using the timer on my film camera which was a Vivitar V3800N SLR 35mm Film Camera Multi Exposure with a 28-70 mm Lens Kit.
That experience reinforced a lesson I've carried with me ever since: the skills you develop today can create opportunities you never imagined tomorrow. At the time, I had no idea those same skills would continue opening doors while I was still serving in the Army. I certainly had no idea they would become the foundation for my career after I left the military.
Build while you serve
When I transitioned from the Army, I still faced challenges, but this time I wasn't starting over.
In 2009, the same month I transitioned out (ETS) of the US Army I continued serving in the Air Force Reserve at age 38 stationed at NAS JRB Join Naval Reserve Base Fort Worth, TX.
I was also using my Post 9/11 GI Bill to attend film school in Dallas, Texas, and instead of simply spending the Stop Loss pay I received after my 13 month deployment to Iraq, I invested it into the next chapter of my life.
While serving with the 610th Security Forces Squadron, my call sign became “Shutterbug” because I continued documenting our unit whenever I had the opportunity. Even as I served in Security Forces, I kept using the creative skills I had developed to capture the people, the training, and the moments that told our unit’s story.
The 610th wasn't a typical Security Forces unit. Our mission was to organize, train, and prepare Airmen for worldwide contingency operations, including training units before they deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. I was in training to become one of those instructors.
As people in the unit learned about my background in photography, I started bringing my camera to training events. Before long, I was documenting the instructors, the students, the field exercises, and the moments that told the story of what our unit was accomplishing. Those photographs became part of the unit's history, and many of them are still preserved today.
While serving in the Air Force Reserve and attending film school, I also launched my commercial photography business, 4 Every Moment Photography, (a brief portfolio of some of my work is below)
What started as a skill I developed years earlier had grown into a business, proving once again that the skills you build today can create opportunities you never imagined tomorrow.
The Journey ContinueD
Photography wasn't the destination.
It was one chapter in a much bigger journey.
From 2009 through 2019, photography became my profession. During those years, I built commercial photography businesses, taught Commercial Photography, Digital Photography, Video Production, and Web Design, and even developed a Crime Scene Photography course.
Those experiences taught me much more than how to use a camera.
They taught me how to solve problems.
How to teach.
How to communicate.
How to serve clients.
And how to build something of value.
Eventually, my journey brought me back to my original passion-filmmaking.
I continued investing in my education by earning certificates from UCLA Extension in Directing in 2020 for Film & Television and Film & TV Development in 2026.

In 2022 I earned certifications in Digital Marketing and Copywriting to understand not only how to create meaningful work, but how to communicate its value and reach the people it was created to serve.
